Buy the Right Fire Extinguisher by Knowing the Codes [Safety]

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Every home should have at least one fire extinguisher, but there are many kinds with different purposes. Home improvement blog This Old House deciphers what label codes mean, so you can buy the right kind for each room.

Photo by greenkozi.

The letters on a fire extinguisher let you know what type of fire the extinguisher works best on. The numbers just before the letters give you even more information on the canister’s effectiveness.

A is ordinary combustibles like wood, paper, and cloth; B is flammable liquids, such as gasoline or cooking oil; and C is live electricity. In the fine print on the label, these letters are preceded by numbers – for example, 3-A:40-B:C – which are the extinguisher’s classification rating. The numbers, assigned by Underwriters Laboratories, tell the extinguisher’s relative effectiveness against each type of fire, regardless of its weight or the chemical it uses. The higher the number, the greater the effectiveness (and likely the higher the price).

In other words, a 4-A rated extinguisher will combat a wood fire better than one rated 2-A. Fire extinguishers come in different sizes: a small 2-pound canister is fine for the car, but you’ll probably want a big 10-pounder for your garage or workshop.

Hit up the post for more information on how to choose the right fire extinguisher, then check out This Old House’s video for a refresher on how to use it:

Top 4 Websites For The Cigar Aficionado

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Cigars, as anyone will tell you, are bad for you.  There is no question about that.  But there are plenty of guilty pleasures that people partake in that are bad for us.  Regardless of the health risks, there are millions of cigar smokers around the world who enjoy a nice stogie once in a while.

In the old days, the only places to buy and get information on cigars were local cigar shops or maybe a magazine.  With the onset of the information age, cigars went digital and now there are plenty of cigar websites and blogs to tickle your tobacco fancy.

But which are good?  Well, do not fret, here I will layout the must-bookmarks  for any cigar lover.

Some of these cigar websites will be great for buying cigars, others for reviews, and some may be a combination of the both.  At the end though, you will have the tools to know what you’re talking about at your next cocktail party or know where to go for the best deals on some premium cigars.

Stogie Review

A great little blog, Stogie Review gives you tons of information on all sorts of things, from humidors to reviews of local cigar shops and lounges.

The reviews are great, giving you a breakdown of what the reviewer thought during the entire smoke process of a cigar, something that is sometimes hard to find.

Some of their reviews even have videos, which are great fun to sit back and watch.

Overall, Stogie Review is a cigar website, by cigar lovers for cigar lovers.  They have informative reviews that even a seasoned veteran can find useful.

Best Cigar Prices

Maybe you already know the cigar you want.  Well those things can get pretty pricey, so surely you want to find the best deal possible.  Luckily, there are a few sites you have to check out when looking for your favorites, Best Cigar Prices is one of them.

I’ve found that Best Cigar Prices combines great prices with a good selection.  I’ve yet to not find a cigar I was looking for on their site. What I like most about Best Cigar Prices, outside of the good deals I can usually find, is the no-nonsense info about the cigar.  For example, here is the page for La Unica #600

I’m given the Strength, Wrapper, Origin, and Shape, all right there.  I don’t have to search for it and all the information is complete.

You can get other things on their site too, like ashtrays, lighters, humidors, and cases.  They even provide some recommendations which is nice to check out from time to time.

In all, Best Cigar Prices is a must if you’re out to pick up a particular cigar.

Cigar Place

Like Best Cigar Prices, Cigar Place has a good selection of cigars to purchase, but I find Best Cigar Price’s better.

The search features are clearly placed on the front page and allow you to search a bunch of different parameters.

The best feature of Cigar Place is their “Best Price Guarantee”.

Basically, they will match a lower price if you can find it, so when you shop at Cigar Place, you know you’re probably going to get a deal.

Cigar Aficionado

Known more for their magazine, Cigar Aficionado also has a great cigar website that is full of awesome resources for the cigar lover.

Unfortunately, most of the usefulness of Cigar Aficionado’s website goes away because you need a paid subscription to access it.  Luckily there are still a few things you can check out that are free, the best being the videos section.

Just click “Video” on the side navigation pane and you should see the following.

Here you can see video reviews of the top cigars from as far back as 2006 along with other interesting videos about the manufacture of cigars and great hotspots in various cities.

There are plenty of other cigar websites out there.  These are just the ones I check out regularly and felt others would like to know about if that didn’t already.

So go, enjoy a stogie after a long work week!  Know any other great sites you think others will enjoy?  Let us know in the comments below.

Ookong Tracks Amazon Prices and Issues Deal Alerts [Downloads]

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Firefox: Sure it’s fun to hunt for deals online, but it’s even better to be alerted when an item you want is at its lowest price. Ookong is an Amazon.com price comparison tool you can use to track price histories.

You can use Ookong as a stand-alone web site, but it’s not as convenient as using the Firefox extension. Once you install the Firefox extension every item on Amazon will have a “Follow” button, as seen in the screenshot above. When browsing you can click the follow button to add the item—as we did with the game Dominion—and it’s added to your watch list. You can click on the item in your watch list to see the price history, seen below:

You can tweak the Ookong options to specify when you want price drop alerts. You can specify a dollar amount, a percentage, and how many times you’ll be alerted to the price drop before Ookong stops notifying you. If you frequently shop at Amazon, Ookong is invaluable for keeping an eye on prices. If you keep a wish list at Amazon the first thing you should do after installing Ookong is to go and “follow” all your wish list items to keep an eye on falling prices.

Ookong can be used as a stand-alone web-based tool or integrated into Firefox. Have a tool for finding the best price online, Amazon-related or otherwise? Let’s hear about it in the comments.

Negotiation Lessons from the Pawn Stars [Negotiation]

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

MetaFilter founder and blogger Matt Haughey spent some time recently watching Pawn Stars (the History channel’s “blue collar version of Antiques Roadshow“), and after a few episodes learned some solid negotiation lessons from the folks at the pawn shop.

The video above offers a few pointers for how to approach a pawn shop when you’re looking to sell things, but Haughey also extracts a pattern for the negotiations that take place in Pawn Stars that seem applicable to nearly any negotiation.

The best part is the negotiation stage. I’m a terrible negotiator and in the past I’ve only done bargaining for new cars over email, since I completely fail trying to persuade lower prices from someone standing in front of me. I’m fascinated at how consistently Rick pulls a fairly low price for items and there is a general pattern to the procedure worth knowing.

Hit up his post for the breakdown, especially if you, like Haughey (and this editor), aren’t generally skilled at negotiation. While you’re getting your haggle on, don’t forget the golden rule of negotiation.

5 Creative Ways To Give Money As Gifts Online

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

The first thing I should point out is that not everyone would probably label all of these ideas as terribly “creative” ways to give money as gifts, but there are times when you’ve waited right up to the last minute, and then realize that you have to get a gift to someone in less than a few days.

You have no time to mail a package, no time to mail a card with money inside – no time to do anything but wonder how you let yourself get into this position.

You don’t want your friend or family member to think that you forgot about them, but you’re also stuck in a situation with very few options. Tina recently wrote a great post with some last minute gift ideas. In this post, I’d like to offer a few additional creative ways to give money as gifts through online resources when you’re really hard-pressed for time.

Why Prepaid Credit Cards Make Excellent Gifts

The simplest and fastest method to send money online is also the most common – sending gift cards. It’s also arguably the least meaningful, because it doesn’t really reflect that you know much about the person. It’s sort of like handing them a wad of cash – how meaningful is that?

Well, things have changed in the world of gift cards. Previously, you had to walk into a bank and specifically purchase a prepaid credit card. A little later, you could find them in your favorite convenience store. These prepaid credit cards were bland and boring. Finally, you can purchase these gift cards online, and you can usually choose from some fairly creative card designs. To find legitimate and safe resources, I would suggest starting by going directly to either Visa or Mastercard.

creative ways to give money as gifts

Visa offers a specific section for online vendors that offer Visa gift cards. In many cases, these are banks where you have to be a member, but if you scroll through the list you’ll find some pretty awesome gift card vendors that let you customize the card design.

creative ways to give money as gifts

For example, on Visa’s list you’ll find Gift Card Lab, where you can actually upload photos and use them to create your own customized prepaid Visa card. Now how cool is that? Mastercard similarly offers a list of online and offline vendors where you can purchase prepaid Mastercard gift cards.

creative ways to give money as gifts

Alas, most of the Visa and Mastercard vendors will only sell gift cards for use within the United States, so if you’re an international customer then you’ll want to check out the awesome international gift card service known as CardRex.

Creative Ways To Give Money In A Meaningful Way

Of course, maybe you don’t just want to send money – but instead send a gift that’s a little bit more meaningful. Maybe the person that you’re sending the gift to is a book lover, or an online shopping addict or loves to dine out! Thankfully, almost every online store offers gift cards, but in my opinion one of the best gift cards that everyone loves to receive is an Amazon Gift Card.

give money

Amazon is an online paradise for any shopaholic. If you’re buying for an avid shopper, this is one gift that will be greatly appreciated. The convenience of Amazon cards is obvious – especially when you just don’t have time to wait for the card to get shipped to the recipient. If you need it today, then e-mail the gift card to them! If you’re throwing a birthday party or they’ll be arriving shortly, just print out the gift card right on your home printer!

If you do send an Amazon card through the mail, they’ll include a free greeting card with it. However, if the standard Amazon Gift Card isn’t creative enough for you, just scroll down the Amazon gift card page for the option to visit HDGreetings where you can personalize an e-card using your own photos. When you’re done, just email it!

give money

Maybe the person you’re sending money to isn’t really a shopper, but instead loves to go out and dine at various restaurants. In that case, the obvious choice is to head on over to Restaurant.com. Sure, you could go out and buy a specific gift card for a single restaurant, but why not let the recipient of your card choose their own dining experience? At Restaurant.com, they get to do just that.

give money

When you buy someone a Restaurant.com certificate, they can choose from over 13,000 restaurants across the United States. If you’re in the UK, check out The Gift Card Centre, Esha Gun for Indian gift cards, or if you’re in a country where it’s virtually impossible to access useful banking services like this – consider the Royal Bank of Canada. It’s one of the few banks that offers truly international services, including credit and debit card services. When living in an unstable part of the world, it’s a safe solution.

Create Fun Customized ScratchOff Cards!

If you want a really creative way to give money, consider creating a Personalized Party Scratchoff card. These is a significant collection of premade scratch cards, but you can also email this vendor and ask them to custom create one for you. Unlike other services that are corporate based, which require you to order thousands of cards, with this service the minimum order is only ten.

unique ways to give money gifts

This is a fun approach, because you can have them play a scratch off game that you’ve customized, and when they win you can hand them the envelope full of money as the prize! It would add a bit of fun and laughter to any party.

Send Graduated Paypal Payments

The last creative way to give money that I’d like to mention is something I call the “graduated” gift approach. It does require that the recipient have a Paypal account. In the case where the friend or family you’re giving the gift to does have one, just go into your Paypal account and send a personal gift payment as shown here.

unique ways to give money gifts

Just one dollar? Yes, it’s the beginning of the graduated gift that will keep on giving every day up to the person’s birthday. This works great up to about age 16. On the number of days prior to the person’s birthday, you send them a very small gift via Paypal. For example, if they’re 15, send them a penny ($0.01) and then write a note that you plan to double the gift every day until their birthday.

unique ways to give money gifts

At first, your gift recipient may scoff as the amount goes from just 1 penny, to two, to four, to eight…  However, on the last few days up to the 15th birthday, the payments are just over $40, just over $80, and then a final payment of $163.84!

Before you take this gift approach, make sure that you understand the power of compounding, and calculate each payment amount before you get started. You’ll have to send a sufficiently low initial payment so that you can afford to send all of them – especially the last few big ones. This approach makes for a wonderful countdown to a big day, like a graduation.

Compare Amazon and eBay pricing at Q-Compare [Price Comparisons]

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

If you’re wondering if it’s worth buying something on eBay because it might be readily available and cheap on Amazon or vice versa, Q-Compare can help you comparison shop between the two services.

Click on the image above for a closer look.

At Q-Compare you select the country you’re in and the category you want to search in—you don’t have to specify the category but it really helps narrow the eBay searches—and Q-Compare displays potential matches, seen in the screen shot above. In the sample search seen here, we were searching for the boardgame Mr. Jack.

Once you select from the initial selection Q-Compare shows the item on Amazon.com and a selection of thumbnails of the item for sale on eBay. One big perk that comes with using Q-Compare as oppose to the Google Shopping is that the results provided by Q-Compare for eBay are for current auctions only, you won’t find any stale auctions in the mix to throw off your price comparison.

Have a favorite tool for comparison shopping? Let’s hear about it in the comments.

PictureFox Improves Product Image Viewing on Amazon [Downloads]

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Firefox only: Clicking through multiple product images while shopping on Amazon is really a chore. PictureFox, a handy Firefox add-on, opens all the images in a single gallery so you can stop making with the clicky-clicky all the time.

If you don’t shop at Amazon often, then you may not realize what a pain—literally—slogging through products with tons of images can be. Nothing makes your repetitive-stress injured mousing finger ache more quickly than clicking on dozens of images to compare the features of a purchase you’re trying to make.

PictureFox installs quickly and follows you every time you visit Amazon’s website. Just click on the arrow the add-on displays along side a product’s main image, and all its associated images—including user photos—all pop open in a single gallery page. The add-on also overrides Amazon’s native “Zoom Viewer” feature and opens up images up to 14 megapixels in high resolution so you can see details before you buy.

To manage PictureFox, just choose Add-ons from Firefox’s Tools menu. Then select what options you want to enable: Use image-flow gallery, show customer pictures, and allow multiple gallery instances. You can also uninstall the add-on from here, if it’s not working out for you.

If you want a full package of Amazon-centeric tweaks for Firefox, then be sure to check out Gina’s Better Amazon Firefox extension. It shortens Amazon URLs, enlarges product images, and more.

Got a trick for surfing the vast digital aisles of Amazon? Dreaming of a perfect add-that will make shopping there easier? Talk about it in the comments.

Only 1 product at a time in osCommerce

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Over at the official osCommerce forum, someone asked about the possibility of only allowing a buyer to select 1 of each product.  My answer was to amend the display of the shopping cart and the shopping cart class…

It’s fairly easy.  What I am going to show you is amending the display using HTML and CSS, then a bit of PHP code to only add 1 of a product in the class file.

Step 1:  Make the quantity box readonly and look nicer.

As someone who has done a lot of HTML over the years I know that the attribute called “readonly” makes an input “read only”!  So I add this to the shopping cart page.  Open up shopping_cart.php and find

PHP:

  1. ‘text’ => tep_draw_input_field(‘cart_quantity[]‘, $products[$i]['quantity'], ’size=”4″‘) . tep_draw_hidden_field(‘products_id[]‘, $products[$i]['id']));

Change it to:

PHP:

  1. ‘text’ => tep_draw_input_field(‘cart_quantity[]‘, $products[$i]['quantity'], ’size=”4″ id=”clubosc” readonly=”readonly”‘) . tep_draw_hidden_field(‘products_id[]‘, $products[$i]['id']));

You can see that I have added the readonly attribute and given it a css ID called “clubosc”.

Step 2:  Amend the look of the box using .css

Open up stylesheet.css and add this code;

PHP:

  1. #clubosc {
  2. border: none;
  3. text-align: center;
  4. background: transparent;
  5. }

Add something to the cart and your quantity box now looks like this:

Whereas the usual look is like this:

Now, because we have made the contents of the quantity field readonly, we have to ensure that not more than 1 product can be added. At the moment a buyer could return to the product page, and click “buy” again, ending up with 2 of the same item in his cart.

Step 3: Making only 1 buyable…

Open up /includes/classes/shopping_cart.php and find this line of code:

PHP:

  1. $this->update_quantity($products_id_string, $qty, $attributes);
