How To Turn Your Nintendo DS Into An iPod

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

how to turn ds into ipodSince its release in 2004, the Nintendo DS handheld console has seen four iterations (original, Lite, DSi, DSi-XL) but some of them haven’t included certain features that one might expect from a handheld device with touchscreen functionality. The Nintendo DS is capable of functioning as a PDA or handheld multimedia device, but Nintendo has chosen to keep it mostly focused on video games.

Meanwhile the Sony PSP, a direct competitor to the DS, has the ability to not only play games, but watch movies, play music, and more. This has left some Nintendo DS owners feeling a little left out.

This article will explain basically how to turn your DS into an iPod so that you can add music playing functionality to your beloved dual-screened handheld console, so you may not need to buy that shiny new iPod.

Although the new Nintendo DSi does have native support for AAC, users with the older iterations or those wishing to play MP3s are left in the dust. However, there is a relatively easy way to unlock the hidden potential of the Nintendo DS.

Buy a Flash Card

how to turn your ds into an ipodThe first thing you will need to do is buy a flash card to use with your DS. A flash card is a game card containing flash memory that you plug in as if you were playing any other game. It enables you to add more functions, such as running the application that lets you play MP3s, Ogg Vorbis, and AAC files. The nice thing about flash cards is their convenience, ease of use, and they won’t void your warranty like some other methods do since it’s just a card and no hardware modification is required. With that said, Nintendo does not condone the use of flash cards, so do it at your own risk.

There are many different brands of DS flash cards and all of them have their own set of features and quality. Notable brands include the CycloDS, the M3, and Acekard. In this tutorial, we will use the Acekard 2i, which is known for being an inexpensive quality card. Acekard’s official web site has a list of recommended distributors to buy from. Unless you already have a MicroSD card to use, I suggest you purchase a package that contains both the MicroSD card and the Acekard.

I bought my whole kit for less than $35, which is around the price of one game. The kit will include simple instructions to prepare the card for the DS, which is basically just downloading and copying some files onto the card using the included USB stick.

Download & Install Moonshell

Now that you’ve got the flash card, you need an application to play the music. This is where Moonshell comes in. Moonshell is an unofficial multimedia player for the Nintendo DS. It can be used to play music, watch videos, view photos, read text, and some other things.

To install Moonshell, follow these instructions:

  1. Mount your MicroSD card into your PC using the USB loader from the Acekard kit.
  2. Download Moonshell from the official web site.

  3. Run or unzip the files to a directory and then run the setup.exe file. It will ask you to select a language.

  4. Choose your mounted card. For me, it’s “Removable Disk J:”.

  5. It will begin to copy the files.

After it’s finished, you can also go ahead and copy over a MP3 to the Removable Disk as well. Then safely eject the USB reader and card.

  6. Plug the Acekard into your DS and power on. Choose to load the Acekard from the main menu.

  7. Select the Moonshell program to run it. On your first boot, it will ask you to select a language.
  8. After it loads (takes a few seconds) you’ll see a file explorer on the bottom screen where you can select the MP3 you want to play. On the top screen you’ll see instructions for how to play tracks, change volume, and so on.

how to turn ds into ipod

  9. Now simply select the song you want to play, and if all goes well, it will begin to play immediately. Continue to add more MP3s to your SD card as needed. You can organize them using file directories, just like you would on your PC. Note: With Moonshell version 2.10, I’ve noticed MP3s with very high bit-rates may not play correctly, but most MP3s work fine.

Was this tutorial easy to follow? Have you used your Nintendo DS to play music? Do you have any tips to improve the experience? If so, please leave us a comment below!

MakeUseOf Must-Have Mac Apps Giveaway Day #8 – Tweetie

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Tweetie is unarguably one of the most robust iPhone Twitter clients, so you wouldn’t expect anything less of the desktop version.

Tweetie’s straightforward and minimalist appearance makes it a breeze to use. Yet, it’s a looker and quite capable.

It’s no wonder we’re giving away 10 copies of Tweetie worth $200 as one of the must-have commercial Mac apps!

Think you’re lucky enough to grab one?

After entering your Twitter credentials, you are taken to a window with your Timeline.

Navigating through your replies, messages and searches is made simple with the small vertical menu on the left hand side of the app.

When scrolling through your, or other users’ timelines, replies directed to you are highlighted in blue.

The icon in the menu bar turns blue when there are new tweets in your timeline, otherwise it remains grey.

From the menu bar, you can quickly access your or other user’s profiles, and switch between your profiles if you have multiple Twitter accounts. From any given profile, you can access a user’s timeline, favourites, replies directed at them, and their profile info.

Tweetie has incorporated five URL shortening services: bit.ly, TinyURL, is.gd, tr.im and DiggBar, as well as six services for sharing your images: yFrog, TwitPic, Twitgoo, Posterous, Imag.ly and Pix.im. And it doesn’t end there. With Tweetie, you can record video directly from your Mac, using a webcam, and share it with your Twitter followers through yFrog. Images uploaded to these services, as well as profile pictures, will open in a slick HUD window.

One of the ways in which Tweetie truly excels is the way it handles conversations. Opening a reply, Tweetie will list all the tweets in that conversation, with the most recent at the top of the list.

For those of you who are fans of keyboard shortcuts, Tweetie has a shortcut for just about everything, from creating a new tweet, to quickly switching between your timeline, replies and direct messages.

If you already use the iPhone app, or if you’ve been looking for a simple but powerful Twitter client to use when you’re at your Mac – Tweetie is perfect for you. Download the free, ad-supported version and take it for a spin.

The Best Free Software To Trick Out Your Blackberry

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

bbHeadIt seems that recently all the attention has been going to the iPhone or the Android platform. There will soon be an uproar with Windows Mobile as they will be doing away with all the old installation packages and there will be no upgrade path to Windows Mobile 7.

Well we felt that we were missing out on showing our Blackberry users a little love. So here, without further ado, is a list of 6 free Blackberry software applications to download and install that will essentially trick out your mobile phone and make it do what you want it to do.

I tried very hard not to include any of the free Blackberry software we already covered here in this post from Grant.

The first application we will cover is the free Blackberry Kindle software. The free Kindle application can be downloaded first to your computer or over the air on your Blackberry via this link. You will be able to link to your Amazon account and any eBooks you have already purchased as well as being able to buy paid and free books via Amazon as well.

This is a nifty feature to add to your Blackberry, essentially making it a eBook reader. Nice!

Next up is an application called StockView and as you can guess it displays NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) and NASDAQ quotes. There are loads of stock applications for the Blackberry but most of them are either charging $29.99 for the application or a monthly fee. This application is totally free (at least for now). The site lists it as a trial but it will work indefinitely.

Now let’s make your Blackberry into a powerful money sending/accepting machine.  Paypal has provided an application via the Blackberry Appworld Store that allows you to log into your Paypal account and view your balance, check your history and send money. This is very cool stuff! Check if that payment came in right on the spot before you continue working…

free Blackberry software

You can download it via this link.

And of course if you have full access to your PayPal account why not your eBay account as well?

Well from the eBay App for the Blackberry you can pretty much do anything you can do directly on eBay’s website without having to be in front of a computer! No more waiting around for that auction to end and you can search auctions on the go!

Now how about having the power of Directory Assistance without having to make a phone call? The application is called Beyond411 and can be downloaded from here.

I first saw this on the iPhone and it looked great. Beyond411 is  a service for information that goes one step beyond basic 411 information. It allows you to drill down and find what you are looking for.  You set your location so it returns local stuff and it goes on to provide, in addition to the directory searching on Yellow Pages, support for maps, driving directions and white pages.

blackberry software free

The last application, and certainly not least worthy, is a program called WorldMate Live. WorldMate Live has a free and a paid version. The free version allows you to view and modify your travel itinerary, see world clocks, weather forecasts and there is even a currency converter in there.

blackberry software free

Consider this a traveler’s best friend or assistant. It will hold your information down so you don’t lose or misplace it. You can go Gold (paid) to have flight alerts and status automatically updated on the go. All in all, after using this application, I don’t know how to travel without it.

Did I leave out your favorite free Blackberry application? Well than hit us up in the comments!

SongSpace – Free WordPress Theme

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Today we have a free WordPress theme designed by Brad of DemusDesign. I took the coded design and ported it to WordPress. This is the first theme here which makes use of the_post_thumbnail feature to handle thumbnails and needs at least WordPress 2.9 to function properly. Other features include several widgetized areas, including a widgetized footer.

SongSpace screenshot

Download

And now onto the features in more detail…

Widgetized Areas

Included in the theme are five widgetized areas.

  • One for the sidebar
  • Three for each footer column
  • One on the 404 template

Songspace Widgets

Color Schemes

Included in the original template are several color scheme stylesheets: blue, brown, green, orange, pink, purple, red, yellow. In the WordPress theme, I decided to integrate these with a very simple theme options page dropdown.

SongSpace Theme Options

The green one is pictured in all the screenshots. If you don’t set anything, the default color scheme is blue.

Post Thumbnails

Instead of using TimThumb like I usually do to handle resizing post thumbnails, I decided to integrate a feature that was made available to themes with the WordPress 2.9 release called the_post_thumbnail.

Simply upload an image like you usually do, select it as your post thumbnail, and it will be displayed on the site. No messing around with custom write panels any more.

songspace-thumbnail

Keep in mind this is my first attempt at integrating post thumbnails into a theme with the_post_thumbnail, so it may take some experimenting to get them just right.

Further the_post_thumbnail() resources:

Conclusion

Hope you all like this WordPress theme. Thanks once again to Brad of DemusDesign for the great template.

Let me know what you think in the comments. Would be especially interested to hear your feedback regarding the_post_thumbnail in comparison to something like TimThumb and using custom fields.

Buy the Right Fire Extinguisher by Knowing the Codes [Safety]

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Every home should have at least one fire extinguisher, but there are many kinds with different purposes. Home improvement blog This Old House deciphers what label codes mean, so you can buy the right kind for each room.

The letters on a fire extinguisher let you know what type of fire the extinguisher works best on. The numbers just before the letters give you even more information on the canister’s effectiveness.

A is ordinary combustibles like wood, paper, and cloth; B is flammable liquids, such as gasoline or cooking oil; and C is live electricity. In the fine print on the label, these letters are preceded by numbers – for example, 3-A:40-B:C – which are the extinguisher’s classification rating. The numbers, assigned by Underwriters Laboratories, tell the extinguisher’s relative effectiveness against each type of fire, regardless of its weight or the chemical it uses. The higher the number, the greater the effectiveness (and likely the higher the price).

In other words, a 4-A rated extinguisher will combat a wood fire better than one rated 2-A. Fire extinguishers come in different sizes: a small 2-pound canister is fine for the car, but you’ll probably want a big 10-pounder for your garage or workshop.

Hit up the post for more information on how to choose the right fire extinguisher, then check out This Old House’s video for a refresher on how to use it:

MakeUseOf Must-Have Mac Apps Giveaway Day #7 – LaunchBar

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Just wait a minute. If Quicksilver was one of the must-have free Mac apps then why this giveaway? If you’re a die-hard QS fan, then I have 2 very good reasons for you.

One; Quicksilver is no longer is active development. In other words, it’s an abandoned project with no support. Two; LaunchBar is an actively progressing platform and is welcoming QS switchers with open arms. Those two reasons good enough for ya?

So that’s why we’ve got 10 LaunchBar licenses worth $330 to giveaway to 10 fortunate productivists. Will you be one of them?

If I were to list down the complete list of things that LaunchBar is capable of, this article would turn into a novel. The truth is, I haven’t even explored every inch of the application. And like all productivity apps, there is a learning curve. The good news is, using LaunchBar comes quite naturally.

But first, a short introduction (for those who aren’t familiar) about what LaunchBar is. From its name, you would probably have guessed that it’s a launcher of some sort. However, it may surprise you to know that it is actually way more than just that. It’s a productivity tool that will help you in so many ways you wouldn’t have thought possible. Let’s take a quick look.

Invoke LaunchBar by pressing a defined hotkey and you’ll get an unobtrusive bar at the top of your screen that’s ready for a command. What command? Well, just about anything works. It’s pretty smart in the sense that it learns your habits. Type “saf” and Safari returns as the first result. So, that’s the application launcher aspect of LaunchBar. What about other things?

LaunchBar can also be used to open a URL in the default browser, even if the browser isn’t already running.

It can help you invoke a “Compose new message” window without having to click on Mail; all from the keyboard.

Heck, if you want, you can even write up the entire email in LaunchBar.

What I really like about LaunchBar is the fact that it can retrieve data from within applications without launching them. This save a lot of time. For example, if I needed some contact information of a friend of mine; I’d invoke Launchbar using the hotkey and start typing the person’s name.

LaunchBar finds it and boom, instant results.

But let’s say I forgot his or her name — I’d type “AB” to summon Address Book and browse my contacts right from LaunchBar.

If you’re just starting out, it’s a good idea to check out everything LaunchBar is capable of by going to its Index where you can view the possible actions and services.

A few more examples of useful LaunchBar features is automatically creating archives of files and folders.

And one that I regularly use — automatically resizing images by preset percentages.

Like I said, it isn’t easy listing every possible feature LaunchBar has to offer. The trial version of LaunchBar is unrestricted for 30 days. Download it and try it free for a month.

Are you a believer now?

Monday, March 8th, 2010

The gap between the desktop/laptop and the mobile device is becoming smaller and smaller, it has never been a better time for mobile app development – The market is huge, very lucrative and highly profitable.
