6 Scary Emails To Send To Friends As A Practical Joke

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

April is coming up and you know what that means, don’t you? April Fools’ Day will be celebrated around the globe on April 1st. For you that means that it’s time to prepare pranks to play on your friends!

If you have friends that live too far away to literally play a practical joke on them, you could send them an email instead. Here is a list of 6 scary emails to send to friends.

Scary Stories

Do you know someone who is scared easily? Then you don’t have to come up with anything smart, you can simply send them a scary story just in time for bedtime. Maybe spice it up by adding some pictures or by sending it anonymously. Scary For Kids has a neat collection of scary stories.

Dead Fake

Dead Fake is a service that lets you send anonymous emails. That alone is not a prank. The thing with this site is that you can make your email appear to come from anyone you choose. Do I need to say more?

You could pretend to be your friend’s boss or a government official and I’m sure you can come up with content that will scare your friend. After all, you know them best!

If you’re short of ideas, check out this Prank Ideas site.

Fright Gauge

Do you have a friend who is very proud of their “visual acuity”? Send them this “Find the Fiend” gauge to reveal how well their eyesight is. It will show them just how much higher-than-average their perception skills really are.

A similar page better suited for a younger audience is Where’s Waldo.

Online Hearing Test

For this one to work, you have to embed the code on a website or one of your social network profiles and then send your friend the link. Unfortunately, the source website gives quite a few clues to this being a fake test. However, if you manage to set this up somewhere, it’s one of the most scary tests to email a friend. Fortunately, the code to embed the test is included.

A similar test is Color Vision Deficiency.

Driver’s License Search

This is a website prank. The site claims that the National Motor Vehicle License Organization is now required by law to provide public access to all US driver’s licenses online. It’s the perfect prank to play on someone who has been refusing to show you their passport or driver’s license with the claim that their picture was so ugly. You can now tell them how shocked you were by how ugly their photo really was.

WOT warns that this page has a poor reputation. Well, does it really surprise you?

The Dexter Hit List

If you want to scare someone in the UK, take advantage of this ingenious video generator. Be sure to enter your victim’s full name, their real age range, an actual occupation, and a real characteristic of them into the form.

Your friend will receive a link to icetruck.tv, a video webpage. The video is that of a press conference in which a serial murder is described with hints to potential future victims. At the end of the video the prank is revealed, so no reasons to worry.

The preview for the video did not work for me, the link that is emailed, however, worked perfectly.

Do you want to remain anonymous when sending scary emails to friends?

Are you looking for more scary stuff? Here is some material for you:

Upgrade offer to be issued to Firefox 3 and Firefox 3.5 users

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Editor’s note: On Mar 11, Mozilla announced over 100,000,000 downloads of Firefox 3.6 to date. Firefox users on prior versions will be offered an upgrade to Firefox 3.6. For more details, check out Mike Beltzner’s Dev News announcement, reposted below.

In the past 50 days, Firefox 3.6 has been downloaded over 100,000,000 times by people looking to improve their web experience, and install the world’s best web browser. Mozilla believes that the user’s choice of web browser matters, and is extremely proud of how many people have chosen to use Firefox.

Starting today, users running older versions of Firefox will be offered the choice of upgrading to Firefox 3.6. We’re presenting this upgrade offer for our users who may not realize that a new version is available:

As always, users will be able to choose between:

  • deferring the decision for 24 hours (“Ask Later”),
  • declining the offer (“No Thanks”), or
  • accepting the free upgrade (“Get the New Version”).

The offer screen will only appear after 10 minutes of keyboard inactivity to ensure we don’t get in the way of anyone’s activities. If a user declines the offer and later regrets that choice, they’ll be able to get it again simply by selecting “Check for Updates” from the “Tools” menu.

Firefox 3.6 has already been chosen over 100,000,000 times by users, and we’re proud to offer it to the remaining Firefox user base. It’s fast, stable, compatible with over 90% of the thousands of Firefox Add-ons, and contains new features such as lightweight themes and plugin version checking.

Can I Play HTML5 YouTube Videos in Firefox Right Now? [Ask Lifehacker]

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Dear Lifehacker,
I’ve read about how HTML5 will change the way I use the web, but it seems like the biggest example of HTML5 in action is on sites like YouTube—which don’t support my favorite browser, Firefox. What’s the deal?

I find myself, and I’m sure tons of others, caught in the Adobe Flash Player vs. HTML5 battle. Flash Player runs terribly on my iMac. Videos on different sites either tell me to install Flash components, show up as blank white areas, load perpetually (CNET TV) or tell me to adjust global storage, and so on. If they do play, I often get the stuttering/buffering that drives me crazy. I had the latest version of Flash Player, uninstalled that and installed the latest 10.1 Beta3, and it’s just as bad.

I considered signing up for YouTube’s HTML5 beta test, but that only works for Safari, Chrome, and IE, not Firefox. I’ve read about Mozilla’s stance on this issue, too.

I apologize for the long intro to my question, but do you know of any Firefox addon or plugin that installs the H.264 codec? We already have to install a plugin for Flash Player, so perhaps it’s possible someone can do this for H.264.

Thanks for any help,
Fighting with Flash

Howdy Fighting,
That’s a good question, and unfortunately one to which there’s no great answer. It actually is technically possible to play HTML5 YouTube videos in Firefox, but it’s extremely convoluted (details below)—and Mac users like yourself won’t have any luck. First, for those who aren’t familiar with why Firefox is excluded from YouTube’s (and some other video sites’) HTML5 support, here’s why:

The Problem

In order to move to HTML5 from Flash, video sites like YouTube need to host their videos in formats friendly to Flash-free HTML5 embedding. Unfortunately there’s no default standard for the format HTML5 videos should use.

As a dedicated open-source, open-standards browser, Firefox chose to support the Ogg Theora video format for HTML5 video. Like Firefox, Ogg Theora is free and open; it’s not covered by any patents, so it requires no licensing and is completely free to use for everyone involved.

Other browser makers, like Chrome and Safari, support H.264 for HTML5 video. Unlike Ogg Theora, H.264 is patented, and would theoretically require browser makers to pay licensing fees to use it (though the company that owns licensing rights to H.264 have said that they’ll offer it royalty free until 2016). Additionally, the issue isn’t just about licensing.

Some tests have shown H.264 to perform better than Ogg Theora in side-by-side comparisons. Apple’s stance on the matter, via Wikipedia, is that “H.264 performs better and is already more widely supported.” For video sites like YouTube, the main concern is likely which format can deliver the highest quality video with the greatest compression rates. Unfortunately for Team Firefox (and supporters of free and open web standards), it’s looking like H.264 might deliver the best results.

It’s worth nothing that browsers can support multiple video formats for HTML5 support, but currently Chrome is the only browser that supports both H.264 and Ogg Theora (though through the Frankenstein efforts of Google Chrome Frame, Internet Explorer also gets support for both). The chart below (from Wikipedia) lays it all out:

As you can see, unless either Firefox changes its stance or sites like YouTube decide to support a free alternative like Ogg Theora, Firefox fanatics don’t have a clear way to watch HTML5 YouTube videos.

The “Solution”

If you’re extremely desperate to watch HTML5 YouTube videos but you absolutely do not want to switch to another browser, you’ve got one simple-yet-absurd solution that’ll only work on Windows:

Watch HTML5 YouTube Videos in Firefox (on Windows)

  1. Install the IE Tab Firefox extension (or one of the other IE-in-Firefox extensions).
  2. Install Google Chrome Frame for IE.

  3. In the IE Tab preferences inside Firefox and set YouTube to always open inside an IE Tab (see image below).
  4. Visit the YouTube HTML5 Video Player opt-in page (if you’ve set up IE Tab correctly above, it should open in an IE Tab inside Firefox) and click the Join the HTML5 Beta link at the bottom of the page.
  5. Go watch an HTML5-supported YouTube video.

And… that’s it. Ridiculous, but I’ve tried it, and it seems to work. (Though, unsurprisingly, it seemed buggy, and worked much better in straight Chrome than it did in either IE with Chrome Frame or Firefox with IE and Chrome Frame.) Unfortunately it doesn’t help Mac users like Fighting with Flash much, but it’s the best we could do.

More than anything, the convoluted process involved in watching an HTML5 YouTube video in Firefox only serves to underscore the problem. It’s not something that’ll likely be solved overnight (though I guess if Mozilla decides to cave into H.264, change could come pretty quickly), but it’s a good reminder that important, web-changing technology almost always comes with a few speed bumps.

Love,
Lifehacker

Got a better method you’re using, or want to weigh in on this whole H.264 vs. Ogg Theora battle? Let’s hear it in the comments.

SongSpace – Free WordPress Theme

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Today we have a free WordPress theme designed by Brad of DemusDesign. I took the coded design and ported it to WordPress. This is the first theme here which makes use of the_post_thumbnail feature to handle thumbnails and needs at least WordPress 2.9 to function properly. Other features include several widgetized areas, including a widgetized footer.

SongSpace screenshot

Download

And now onto the features in more detail…

Widgetized Areas

Included in the theme are five widgetized areas.

  • One for the sidebar
  • Three for each footer column
  • One on the 404 template

Songspace Widgets

Color Schemes

Included in the original template are several color scheme stylesheets: blue, brown, green, orange, pink, purple, red, yellow. In the WordPress theme, I decided to integrate these with a very simple theme options page dropdown.

SongSpace Theme Options

The green one is pictured in all the screenshots. If you don’t set anything, the default color scheme is blue.

Post Thumbnails

Instead of using TimThumb like I usually do to handle resizing post thumbnails, I decided to integrate a feature that was made available to themes with the WordPress 2.9 release called the_post_thumbnail.

Simply upload an image like you usually do, select it as your post thumbnail, and it will be displayed on the site. No messing around with custom write panels any more.

songspace-thumbnail

Keep in mind this is my first attempt at integrating post thumbnails into a theme with the_post_thumbnail, so it may take some experimenting to get them just right.

Further the_post_thumbnail() resources:

Conclusion

Hope you all like this WordPress theme. Thanks once again to Brad of DemusDesign for the great template.

Let me know what you think in the comments. Would be especially interested to hear your feedback regarding the_post_thumbnail in comparison to something like TimThumb and using custom fields.

MakeUseOf Must-Have Mac Apps Giveaway Day #7 – LaunchBar

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Just wait a minute. If Quicksilver was one of the must-have free Mac apps then why this giveaway? If you’re a die-hard QS fan, then I have 2 very good reasons for you.

One; Quicksilver is no longer is active development. In other words, it’s an abandoned project with no support. Two; LaunchBar is an actively progressing platform and is welcoming QS switchers with open arms. Those two reasons good enough for ya?

So that’s why we’ve got 10 LaunchBar licenses worth $330 to giveaway to 10 fortunate productivists. Will you be one of them?

If I were to list down the complete list of things that LaunchBar is capable of, this article would turn into a novel. The truth is, I haven’t even explored every inch of the application. And like all productivity apps, there is a learning curve. The good news is, using LaunchBar comes quite naturally.

But first, a short introduction (for those who aren’t familiar) about what LaunchBar is. From its name, you would probably have guessed that it’s a launcher of some sort. However, it may surprise you to know that it is actually way more than just that. It’s a productivity tool that will help you in so many ways you wouldn’t have thought possible. Let’s take a quick look.

Invoke LaunchBar by pressing a defined hotkey and you’ll get an unobtrusive bar at the top of your screen that’s ready for a command. What command? Well, just about anything works. It’s pretty smart in the sense that it learns your habits. Type “saf” and Safari returns as the first result. So, that’s the application launcher aspect of LaunchBar. What about other things?

LaunchBar can also be used to open a URL in the default browser, even if the browser isn’t already running.

It can help you invoke a “Compose new message” window without having to click on Mail; all from the keyboard.

Heck, if you want, you can even write up the entire email in LaunchBar.

What I really like about LaunchBar is the fact that it can retrieve data from within applications without launching them. This save a lot of time. For example, if I needed some contact information of a friend of mine; I’d invoke Launchbar using the hotkey and start typing the person’s name.

LaunchBar finds it and boom, instant results.

But let’s say I forgot his or her name — I’d type “AB” to summon Address Book and browse my contacts right from LaunchBar.

If you’re just starting out, it’s a good idea to check out everything LaunchBar is capable of by going to its Index where you can view the possible actions and services.

A few more examples of useful LaunchBar features is automatically creating archives of files and folders.

And one that I regularly use — automatically resizing images by preset percentages.

Like I said, it isn’t easy listing every possible feature LaunchBar has to offer. The trial version of LaunchBar is unrestricted for 30 days. Download it and try it free for a month.

Are you a believer now?

How do I win a copy?
