Use Screencast To Manage & Share Your Media Files

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

jinglogo.jpgA few of us writers here at MUO are pretty fond of the free screen capture application, Jing, because of its practical and time saving features and because, if you haven’t noticed, we use lots of screenshots in our articles. MUO has already published a few articles about how to use Jing for both image and video screen capture.

But when I recently started using the program, I realized that none of the articles about Jing had explored its connected web-based image management service, Screencast. Screencast, hosted and powered by TechSmith, has both a free and pro option, just like Jing does.

Screencast can be a useful way to manage and share your image and video capture beyond your computer and have them stored in the cloud, i.e., on TechSmith’s server. When you set up your free account, all your uploaded files are put in your library. The interface design for your library is clean and professional, but how content is managed and shared might not be that obvious to some users.

After you’ve got some content uploaded to your library (using Jing or by uploading files on your computer), all your files are by default available for public viewing, so you can share media files with anyone. You can, however, restrict access to your files, which I will explain below.

Just as you do on your computer, you can upload any image and video files to your library. You’re not limited to screen captures you take with Jing. If you find yourself using your Screencast account on a regular basis, you might consider downloading the free Screencast Uploader, which is great for uploading large files or batches of media files. While you can of course upload files directly from Jing (see other MUO articles about this), it might be a good idea to first save them on your hard drive and then upload files to your account so that you have them stored in two places.

share media files

Folder Management

Creating folders in your Screencast library to share media files is not that different from creating folders on your computer. You simply click the Create Folder button and provide the name and other information you want associated with it.

share media files

You have options for changing who can and cannot access your folders. This is useful for private, non-public folders, or if you want folders that only your clients, co-workers, or organizational members can access. So when you’re setting up your folder, simply click on the Change button, and you will be given four options for changing the access privileges for selected folders.

share media files

After you save a folder, you have options of course for re-opening it, editing its name, and its privacy level. Each folder also gets assigned a unique URL that you can share over the Internet. Just click on the three-arrows icon that pops up when place your cursor over a folder.

Jingsharing.png

With the resulting URL links, you have the option to email and post links directly to the content of your selected folders. This means you can organize the files in the folder and present them as a basic image gallery.

Moving files from one folder to the next is also very similar to how it’s done on your computer. You click the Move Content button and you are presented with a list of all your content in which you can move files and folders around.

Jingmovecontent.png

Jing Playlist

Another useful option for quickly creating and managing folders is to use the Playlist option. Simply click on the Create Playlist button on the home page of your library, and you are again presented with a list of all your content. From there, check the items that you want to make up a playlist.

Jingplaylist.png

When you share the playlist, viewers are presented with a basic image gallery display of your content. The name of the playlist is in the upper left-hand corner of the page. Unfortunately, however, there’s no way to customize your page so that titles of playlists can be larger or centered in the middle top of the page.

Jingplaylistgallery.png

Lastly, each file and folder includes details about not only their size and modification date, but you can get information about how many times a designated file or folder was viewed. On your library homepage, click the list view button in the upper-right of the page to access this information.

Jingdetailsview.png

While the Screencast Pro account (which cost $99/year) has lots more storage and bandwidth, as well as the ability to customize the design of your library page, the free account is very generous and practical especially for sharing screen captures and videos beyond say YouTube or Flickr. The Jing application makes it easy to quickly capture screen captures and upload them to your account.

Although there are a few features I would like to see added to the service, Jing and Screencast are quickly replacing some of the screen capturing solutions I have been using over the past few years. And seeing how the Jing project has evolved over time, I think we’re going to see some exciting new features in future updates.

Let us know what screen capturing applications and services you use. Have you tried Jing, and if so how is it working out for you?

Microsoft Windows 7: The 7 Most Noticeable New Features

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Windows 7 has been out in the wild for quite sometime now.

Many people have had a taste of what it has to offer. Windows 7 brings with it a number of improvements in key areas.

Here are some of the Windows 7 new features that stand out in the latest version of the popular operating system.

Taskbar and Jumplists

There are lots of tweaks to the Taskbar. The taskbar buttons are icon only by default, they group by default. You can pin applications to the taskbar, user Ctrl + to invoke pinned applications. Applications now support jumplists, which help you launch a particular file or url from the button directly. The taskbar buttons show a progress indicator if the application is displaying a progress bar and many more.

windows 7 new features

Libraries

Libraries are like virtual folders. A library can draw its content from multiple folders. For example, if you have your Music stored under more than one folder across various drives, you can see them consolidated into a single virtual folder or library. Libraries can help you manage clutter and organize files the way you like while still being able to view them inside a single location. Details here.

windows 7 new features

Windows XP Mode

Windows 7 offers something known as the Windows XP mode. What Windows XP mode is that it allows you to run a fully functional copy of Windows XP from within Windows 7. It is essentially the same as running Windows XP virtual machine inside a virtualization software like VirtualBox. You need to download additional files and make sure your computer can support Windows XP mode. Details here.

Desktop and Theming

Desktop and Theming got a major overhaul with Windows Vista. Windows 7 manages to add new features to those changes. Themes are now easier to create and share. Right click on the desktop and click Personalize and you can access every aspect of the themes from the resulting window. Windows can now natively rotate the wallpaper choosing one from the collection you specify. There are also a number of themes available online as well.

windows 7 new features

Aero Snap and Aero Peek

Aero Snap and Aero Peek help you work with multiple open windows easily. Aero Snap can snap windows to the sides or the top, making them cover the entire screen or exactly half the screen. Just hold the title bar of a window and drag it to one of the edges of the screen. Aero Peek on the other hand lets you peek through all the open windows so that you can see you desktop easily. Aero Peek can be activated using Win + Space key or by hovering the mouse pointer over the bottom right corner of the taskbar.

Media Streaming

Apart from inclusion of new codecs to support even more filetypes, Windows Media Player can now be used to stream media files. The streaming can take place within your network or over the Internet as you please. You can stream to other computers as well as devices that are compatible with Windows 7. Details here.

The HomeGroup

Its not a stretch to own more than one computer these days. If you have more than one computer at your home you would most likely want to put them on a network so that you can share Internet Connection, share music, videos and pictures. Windows 7 now creates a HomeGroup that all other Windows 7 machines can be a part of and the network is up and running in a snap. You also get a password to control access to your home network.

There are a host of other features and under the hood improvements that you may not notice in day to day use. It supports more hardware, boots faster, runs snappier. The games, media center and accessories like Paint and Calculator have been updated as well. Overall it wouldn’t be wrong to consider it the best Operating System from folks over at Redmond. There is nothing stopping you to hold on to the previous version of Windows and bypass Windows 7 altogether as was the case with Windows Vista.

What are your favorite Windows 7 new features?

Paint a Room Like a Pro [Home Improvement]

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

It’s tough to completely screw up painting a room—dump the paint on the floor maybe?—but painting a room really well isn’t that easy, either. Home blog Re-Nest’s guide to painting a room efficiently offers a few expert tips.

Re-Nest’s guide to room-painting guide covers everything from making sure to remember to remove all the fixture and switch covers before getting into painting to the importance of edging in the areas your going to paint for nice even color and clean edges. If you’ve helped paint a room before but never done the cutting in part, it’s worth a read:

Cutting In: This is the most time consuming, but most important step to ensure a good looking paint job. When using the brush we just dip it directly into the paint can rather than pouring into a separate container to minimize wasted paint, but never dip a brush more than 1/3 then length of the brush or else you’ll risk ruining the brush because it will be very difficult to clean. When handling the brush, hold it as you would a pencil for maximum control. Press the brush lightly against the surface, then, as you move the brush, add just enough pressure to make the bristles fan away from the direction of your brushstroke. The bent bristles and the pressure will release a fine bead of paint that will spread perfectly along the edge you are creating.

Beginning at the corner of the room, use your angled brush to cut in (also known as edging), applying a thick band (2-3″ wide) of paint along the perimeter where you’re cutting in. Do this in 4-5″ long sections to ensure precision and a sufficient coating of paint. You will need to cut-in around all trim, ceiling/wall intersections, inside corners, and anywhere there is a change in color.

Check out the link below for the full guide, and if you consider yourself a bit of an expert hand at room painting, share your expertise in the comments.

Run XP Mode in VirtualBox Instead of Virtual PC [Virtualization]

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Windows 7 only: If you’ve been itching to use the new XP Mode feature in Windows 7, but you aren’t too keen on using Virtual PC or just prefer VirtualBox, here’s how to use XP Mode in VirtualBox.

We’ve already covered how to set up and use XP Mode in Windows 7, how to use it on a machine without hardware virtualization, and then how to create your own XP Mode for any version of Windows with the freeware VMWare Player software, but if VirtualBox is your virtualization platform of choice, writer Matthew from How-To Geek (my home away from Lifehacker) has you covered with a guide to setting up XP Mode under Windows 7 using VirtualBox instead of Virtual PC.

The basic principle is pretty simple, requiring you to just install XP Mode from Microsoft without the additional Virtual PC component, creating a copy of the XP Mode virtual hard drive, and then using it as an existing hard drive in a new VirtualBox VM. Because you can only legally install XP Mode for Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate PCs, if you’re using a different version you should probably create your own XP Mode that works anywhere.

Update: Several readers have pointed out that XP Mode doesn’t properly activate when used under VirtualBox, so the author is researching whether there is a workaround. Until then, be sure to check out how to create your own XP Mode that works anywhere.

MakeUseOf Must-Have Mac Apps Giveaway Day #3 – 1Password 3

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

If you’re a real web-bug, you must have tonnes of usernames and password to keep track of. Many people attempt to solve this problem by using a universal password for every web service. Experienced tech-gurus will tell you that’s not a good idea.

You should never jeopardise security for the sake of convenience.

That’s where 1Password steps in. It’s a fantastic password manager, form-filler and personal information vault. And we have 5 licenses worth $200 to give away!

Once you have 1Password installed, it will ask you to set up a master password which is used to unlock the 1Password application. You do not need to keep the application running in order for 1Password to operate — it will install a browser plugin that will handle all of your password-saving and form-filling needs.

However, the app will come in handy whenever you need to review/edit password information.

Besides storing internet username and passwords, 1Password is an awesome and secure personal information vault. Use it to store email account passwords and other details, instant messaging credentials and file sharing (Amazon S3, FTP, MobileMe) account information. If you find yourself frequently filling in forms, 1Password makes life a little easier by automatically entering your home address and other contact information, not to mention storing them securely (unlike your browser’s form filler).

It can also be used to store sensitive notes from prying eyes.

1Password also offers a secure wallet feature which can be used to store financial information such as personal banking, credit cards; and to back up important documents like your passport, driving license and social security number.

Finally, to help you come up with secure passwords, 1Password offers a built-in password generator that’s much more robust (and easier to reach) than the built-in Mac OS X Password Assistant.

If you need to access your sensitive information while you’re on the road, 1PasswordAnywhere is a simple yet clever solution. Or you could always get their iPhone app, which syncs with the desktop client. So, are you convinced yet?

15 Do’s and Don’ts of Effective WordPress Theming

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Today I want to go over some of the do’s and don’ts of WordPress theming. Regardless if you’re building a WordPress theme for yourself or if you’re building one for release so others can use it, you should be following these do’s and don’ts as closely as possible.

1. Do not hard code full URL’s into your themes

When you’re building your themes, there may be times where images are used, for social media icons or RSS feed icons, and during these points in your coding, you may want to code the full url out (ie: /wp-content/themes/your-theme-name/images/image.jpg) but this will cause errors in the website whenever the person using your theme changes their theme folder name.

The proper codes to use in order to pull the full URL’s dynamically are below.

/images/image.jpg

2. Do utilize the template tags as much as possible

WordPress does an awesome job of laying out all of the template tags you can use, so do yourself a favor (as well as the rest of the people who may use your themes) and learn the WordPress template tags – then utilize them as much as possible. By using template tags, you’re able to ensure that your themes don’t break or cause errors when the end user sets it up and gets it running.

3. Do not forget navigation drop down codes

When you’re building your WordPress theme, one item that seems to be overlooked is the drop down codes for your navigation. Sure, some themes might have the navigation set up to not utilize the multi level ul’s, keeping everything in one single row, but what about for those of us who have multiple child pages for each main parent page?

There’s a solution for that. You can check out some of the tutorials below on how to code multi-level drop down menus.

4. Do make your theme widget ready

In my opinion, as an end user, there’s nothing worse than deploying a theme and getting ready to set everything up, only to notice that I am now faced with the task of trying to customize sections of my themes by hard coding information into them. Your sidebars and various other places in your theme (do you have a three column footer? widgetize it!) should be as easy to edit as possible. It’s one of the easiest things to do to your themes, and will benefit your theme’s users a lot.

Automattic has a great tutorial on how to widgetize your theme. Check it out here.

Also be sure to check out the widgetizing themes tutorial here at Theme Lab.

5. Do not make users rely on numerous plugins for your theme to work

If you’re releasing themes for free or creating commercial WordPress themes, you should take your end users best interest into play with you’re building your themes. Cluttering your themes with 5-10 needed plugins will not only cause people to be frustrated when downloading and setting up your theme on their site, it will also cause a lot of people to not download it at all because, lets face it, people don’t have attention spans of more than 2-3 seconds.

For instance, if you’re going to set up pagination in your theme, why not utilize this article to learn how to set it up in your theme automatically. Cats Who Code has a pretty good tutorial on how to add pagination into your theme without needing to activate a plugin.

6. Do show the search term on the search results page

For some reason, this is an often overlooked tip that you can (and should) implement into your themes. It’s a simple, one line code that allows your theme to remind the visitor what they just searched for. It may seem trivial, but it is helpful so if the results bring back zero posts, the visitor knows the exact phrase they searched for and can then type in a different search term.

Below is the code used to replace your current “Search Results” title in your theme.

Search Results for

7. Do not half ass your 404 error pages

Instead of just leaving your 404 page to say “404 – page not found”, why not give your visitors some more options? Adding in a category list, recent posts, popular posts, a search box and (if you’d like to monetize your 404 page) an advertisement can give your 404 page some spice compared to the dull, useless ones found in most WordPress themes.

If you’re looking for 404 page inspiration, Smashing Magazine has a killer showcase of 404 pages from around the web that is worth checking out.

8. Do make sure you have all of the basic files in your theme folder

When you’re building a WordPress theme, making sure you can customize it as much as possible right from the get-go is essential. Starting out with an index.php, header.php, sidebar.php and footer.php file combo might seem like a good idea to the minimalists out there, but I’d suggest starting out with all of the basics below in order to give you a bit more control over what is displayed – when, where and how.

  • style.css
  • header.php
  • index.php
  • sidebar.php
  • footer.php
  • single.php
  • page.php
  • comments.php
  • 404.php
  • functions.php
  • archive.php
  • searchform.php
  • search.php

For more information about these template files and what they do, check out the template hierarchy page on WordPress.org.

9. Do not forget the RSS integration

When you’re building your blog, one of the items that draw peoples attention the most is the ability to subscribe to your blog via an RSS reader. So, instead of requiring your theme users to add this information in themselves, why not take the steps to add in a subscribe to rss box just like you do the search box. Add a RSS button, a subscribe via email option and you can also even add in the subscriber count in text by adding this bit of code to your theme where you’d like it to be displayed (replace “feedburner-id” with your own FeedBurner ID – if you’re releasing this theme in the wild, take a look at #11 on our list and make sure you have this as an option).

feed->entry['circulation'];
    echo $fb;
    //end get cool feedburner count
    ?>

10. Do add CSS styles for threaded comments

If you’re building a theme, you should always be prepared for threaded comments. It’s a feature in WordPress that a lot of blogs use in order to build interaction in their comments section. So, preparing your stylesheet for threaded comments is a great idea. Chris has a great post on CSS codes for the default CSS classes that WordPress spits out in their comments section, giving your theme a stylized comments section without needing to touch the comments.php file.

11. Do not release a theme without an options panel

Some people might not agree with this, but I believe it’s a part of the natural progression of WordPress theming. If your theme isn’t running some kind of WordPress options panel with the ability to edit, customize and change items in your theme without having to edit codes, you’re doing something wrong.

If you’re not sure how to go about creating your own theme options panel, the links below will show you how to do it.

12. Do make sure your themes work out of the box

This goes hand in hand with #5 on out list – you should always make sure your themes work right out of the box. Some themes I’ve seen require 5-6 steps before the theme is workable on the site, including, but not limited to, plugin activation and theme option panel editing/saving. If the theme requires certain things, make sure there’s a backup default item used.

For instance, in your theme options panel you’re building and/or using, make sure there’s default information in each section, so things are showing up, regardless if the end user has updated them or not. The same goes with plugins, if you’re using a WordPress pagination plugin in your theme, why not code it in so that the theme reverts back to the previous/next links if the plugin isn’t active.

13. Do not make excessive use of custom fields

Yes, most magazine style WordPress themes from a couple years ago were built utilizing custom fields at every turn, but most people will not want to actually fill out 3, 4 or 5 custom fields for each post. So, make things easier for them. If you’re going to show an image from the post on the home page of your theme, take this handy piece of code and add it into your themes functions.php file and it will automatically the posts first image, without the need of a custom field.

// Get URL of first image in a post
function catch_that_image() {
global $post, $posts;
$first_img = '';
ob_start();
ob_end_clean();
$output = preg_match_all('//i', $post->post_content, $matches);
$first_img = $matches [1] [0];

// no image found display default image instead
if(empty($first_img)){
$first_img = "/images/default.jpg";
}
return $first_img;
}

Once you’ve added that code in, just add in your theme’s files wherever you’d like the image to show up.

Thanks to the good ol’ WordPress support forums for this handy tip.

14. Do SEO your tag</h3> <p>A great way to ensure your theme is as SEO ready as possible is to remove the default <title> tag found in your themes header.php file and replace it with the codes below. It will give your theme’s titles a bit more juice and help the SEO efforts that your themes users will want to put into practice – all without requiring them to touch a thing.</p> <p><code></p> <pre><?php if ( is_home() ) { ?><? bloginfo('name'); ?> | <?php bloginfo('description'); ?><?php } ?> <?php if ( is_search() ) { ?>Search Results for <?php /* Search Count */ $allsearch = &new WP_Query("s=$s&showposts=-1"); $key = wp_specialchars($s, 1); $count = $allsearch->post_count; _e(''); echo $key; _e(' — '); echo $count . ' '; _e('articles'); wp_reset_query(); ?><?php } ?> <?php if ( is_404() ) { ?><? bloginfo('name'); ?> | 404 Nothing Found<?php } ?> <?php if ( is_author() ) { ?><? bloginfo('name'); ?> | Author Archives<?php } ?> <?php if ( is_single() ) { ?><?php wp_title(''); ?> | <?php $category = get_the_category(); echo $category[0]->cat_name; | <?php bloginfo('name'); ?><?php } ?> <?php if ( is_page() ) { ?><? bloginfo('name'); ?> | <?php $category = get_the_category(); echo $category[0]->cat_name; ?>|<?php wp_title(''); ?><?php } ?> <?php if ( is_category() ) { ?><?php single_cat_title(); ?> | <?php $category = get_the_category(); echo $category[0]->category_description; ?> | <? bloginfo('name'); ?><?php } ?> <?php if ( is_month() ) { ?><? bloginfo('name'); ?> | Archive | <?php the_time('F, Y'); ?><?php } ?> <?php if ( is_day() ) { ?><? bloginfo('name'); ?> | Archive | <?php the_time('F j, Y'); ?><?php } ?> <?php if (function_exists('is_tag')) { if ( is_tag() ) { ?><?php single_tag_title("", true); } } ?> | <? bloginfo('name'); ?><!--formatted--></code></pre> <h3>15. Do not forget about breadcrumbs</h3> <p>As an added piece of navigation in your themes, breadcrumbs (in my opinion) should be utilized as much as possible. It is not only good for SEO purposes, but it also allows the visitor to navigate through your site much quicker. There are WordPress plugins for breadcrumbs, but thanks to <a href="http://www.catswhocode.com/blog/how-to-breadcrumb-function-for-wordpress">Cats Who Code</a>, we now know how to add a breadcrumb function into our WordPress themes.</p> <p>First, add the below codes into your themes functions.php file (customized a bit from the original Cats Who Code post, linked above).</p> <pre><code>function the_breadcrumb() { echo ' <ul id="crumbs">'; if (!is_home()) { echo ' <li><a href="'; echo get_option('home'); echo '">'; echo 'Home'; echo "</a></li> "; if (is_category() || is_single()) { echo ' <li>'; the_category(' </li> <li> '); if (is_single()) { echo "</li> <li>"; the_title(); echo '</li> '; } } elseif (is_page()) { echo ' <li>'; echo the_title(); echo '</li> '; } } elseif (is_tag()) {single_tag_title();} elseif (is_day()) {echo" <li>Archive for "; the_time('F jS, Y'); echo'</li> ';} elseif (is_month()) {echo" <li>Archive for "; the_time('F, Y'); echo'</li> ';} elseif (is_year()) {echo" <li>Archive for "; the_time('Y'); echo'</li> ';} elseif (is_author()) {echo" <li>Author Archive"; echo'</li> ';} elseif (isset($_GET['paged']) && !empty($_GET['paged'])) {echo " <li>Blog Archives"; echo'</li> ';} elseif (is_search()) {echo" <li>Search Results"; echo'</li> ';} echo '</ul> '; }<!--formatted--></code></pre> <p>Next, place this piece of code anywhere you want your breadcrumbs to display.</p> <p><code></p> <pre><?php the_breadcrumb(); ?></pre> <p><!--formatted--></code></p> <h3>Thanks for reading over the article</h3> <p>Thank you for taking the time to read the article. You’re driving down the Interstate on a very long and tiring car ride. Your mind wanders in and out of one topic after another. Then, suddenly, you’re struck with inspiration for a brilliant blog entry. You pull out your trusty mobile phone, turn it on, and dial the phone number for your blog.</p> <p>Once the computerized voice says, “<em>Please enter your message</em>,” you start reeling off your blog entry. Your voice passes through your mobile phone and enters the automated system that transcribes it into text, and automatically transmits your entry onto your blog. After about a minute of dictating your blog entry into the phone, you are satisfied, and you hang up. Immediately, the entire world can read the blog entry that you’ve just created, and the insight and wisdom published therein. Welcome to the futuristic world of voice blogging.</p> <p><span></span><br /> Does this sound like science fiction? Well it’s not. After tinkering around for a few hours last night, I developed a series of Google Voice Settings, a Wordpress Plugin and other techniques to build an automated Voice-to-Blog system using only your mobile phone, or any other phone you wish in order to try out voice blogging for yourself.</p> <h3><strong>Configure Your Google Voice Account for Voice Blogging<br /> </strong></h3> <p>The basic operation of Google Voice is this: you are provided with a unique phone number, which you can use to accumulate voicemails, forward calls to other phones, or a variety of other unique uses. What some bloggers are doing is calling in their blog entry, which gets transcribed and stored on their Google Voice voicemail system.</p> <p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36988" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/voice1.jpg" alt="" width="392" height="290" /></p> <p>Later, when they have access to a computer, they go in and manually obtain the “<em>Embed</em>” code so they can embed the voicemail text into their blog. This system is inconvenient and cumbersome. Let’s look at how you can automate this process instead – so that the blog entries that you call in get automatically routed and published to your blog.</p> <p>First, from your Google Voice account, go to <em>Settings</em> and then click on “<em>Voicemail & SMS</em>“.</p> <p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36989" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/voice2.jpg" alt="" width="462" height="368" /></p> <p>Here, make sure you’ve selected the checkbox next to “<em>Email the message to:</em>” and then insert a unique email address that you’ve set up for the sole purpose of this Phone-to-Blog system you’re setting up. Avoid free email accounts that don’t have POP3 access. For this system to work, the address you choose needs to have POP3 enabled.</p> <p>Now that you’ve configured Google Voice to forward all new voicemails to your unique email address, it’s time to figure out how to get that email address to post the text to your blog.</p> <h3><strong>Setting Up The Postie Wordpress Plugin</strong></h3> <p>There are lots of options to do this depending on what type of blog you use. For Wordpress, I use the <a href="http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/postie/">Postie plugin</a> for this purpose. There are other methods to allow an email address to post to your blog, such as the one I previously described for <a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-send-blog-posts-to-blogger-with-your-cellphone/">Blogger</a>. Download and install <a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-first-wordpress-plugins-you-must-install/">whatever plugin</a> or tool you use for your blog. In the case of Postie, once it’s installed, you just click on <em>Settings </em>and <em>Postie</em>.</p> <p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36990" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/voice3.jpg" alt="" width="159" height="254" /></p> <p>In the settings section for Postie, you can configure the email address that you forward your Google Voicemails to. You insert the POP3 settings just as you would when you set up any email client.</p> <p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36991" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/voice4.jpg" alt="" width="562" height="395" /></p> <p>Next, click on the “<em>Users</em>” tab, and for “<em>Authorized Addresses:</em>” make sure to add an entry for “<em>voice-noreply@google.com</em>” – this is the address that all incoming voicemails arrive from. By adding it to this list, you’re authorizing the incoming emails from Google Voice to automatically post to your blog.</p> <p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36993" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/voice5.jpg" alt="" width="366" height="294" /></p> <p>On the “<em>Message</em>” tab, you want to configure the system so that it strips out all of the junk from before and after the transcribed message in the Google Voice email. Incoming emails have the word “<em>Transcript:</em>” at the beginning of the transcription, and “<em>Play message:</em>” at the end. So you can use these constant words as place markers for the beginning and the end of the blog post.</p> <p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36995" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/voice6.jpg" alt="" width="543" height="378" /></p> <h3><strong>Posting To Your Blog From Any Phone</strong></h3> <p>Now that you have Google Voice set up to transcribe your call and forward it to your email, and you’ve got Postie set up to monitor your email and post any new incoming Google Voice emails to your blog – you’re ready to start posting blog entries with just your voice!  You’re ready for voice blogging! Now the ultimate test – how well does Google Voice transcription work, and is it good enough to transcribe blog entries?</p> <p>In the following test, I simply picked up my home phone and dialed my Google Voice phone number. After getting to voicemail, I left my “blog entry” in the form of a voice message.</p> <p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36997" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/voice71.jpg" alt="" width="323" height="136" /></p> <p>My message was as follows:</p> <blockquote><p><em>This is a test of using google voice to post at my blog. Hopefully google voice can transcribe my voice accurately. Let’s see how well google voice can do. Thank you.</em></p> </blockquote> <p>Now, under the Postie mailserver settings, I’ve set Postie to check my email account hourly. However, there’s a “<em>Run Postie</em>” button that you can use to manually force the plugin to check for new emails. Almost immediately, I saw the following post appear on my blog.</p> <p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-37001" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/voice8.jpg" alt="" width="474" height="262" /></p> <p>Speaking slowly and clearly into the phone seems to help, but for some reason Google’s transcription script has a difficult time recognizing the word Google! One other problem I recognized with this approach is that the subject of the email from Google Voice, which includes your full telephone number, gets posted as the blog title.</p> <p>As far as I can tell, there’s no way to force Google Voice to send the email without a subject (so the blog entry would default to the one you set up in the Postie settings) – so the only alternative is to call your Google Voice number using the U.S. *69 approach (anonymous calling) or whatever feature blocks your phone number where you live.</p> <p>In time, hopefully Google Voice will improve its transcription feature so that there are fewer errors, and even more importantly – hopefully there are more customization options throughout Google Voice, so that things like notification emails can be tailored to suit your needs and make it much easier to perform voice blogging through Google Voice.</p> <p>Do you like this approach to using Google Voice to blog straight from your phone? Do you know of any other alternatives? Share your feedback in the comments section below.</p> <p> <em><br /> <h4>Related posts</h4> <p></em></p> <ul> <li>(8)<a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-free-ways-guestbook-website/" that not everyone would probably label <em>all</em> of these ideas as terribly “creative” <span>ways to give money as gifts</span>, but there are times when you’ve waited right up to the last minute, and then realize that you have to get a gift to someone in less than a few days.</p> <p>You have no time to mail a package, no time to mail a card with money inside – no time to do anything but wonder how you let yourself get into this position.</p> <p>You don’t want your friend or family member to think that you forgot about them, but you’re also stuck in a situation with very few options. Tina recently wrote a great post with some <a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-free-last-minute-easy-quick-greetings-gift-ideas/">last minute gift ideas</a>. In this post, I’d like to offer a few additional creative <span>ways to give money as gifts</span> through online resources when you’re really hard-pressed for time.</p> <p><span></span></p> <h3><strong>Why Prepaid Credit Cards Make Excellent Gifts</strong></h3> <p>The simplest and fastest method to send money online is also the most common – sending gift cards. It’s also arguably the <em>least</em> meaningful, because it doesn’t really reflect that you know much about the person. It’s sort of like handing them a wad of cash – how meaningful is that?</p> <p>Well, things have changed in the world of gift cards. Previously, you had to walk into a bank and specifically purchase a prepaid credit card. A little later, you could find them in your favorite convenience store. These prepaid credit cards were bland and boring. Finally, you can purchase these gift cards online, and you can usually choose from some fairly creative card designs. To find legitimate and safe resources, I would suggest starting by going directly to either <a href="http://usa.visa.com/personal/cards/prepaid/gift-card-online.jsp">Visa</a> or <a href="http://www.mastercard.com/us/personal/en/aboutourcards/prepaid/index.html">Mastercard</a>.</p> <p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36769" style="border: black 1px solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/giftcard1.jpg" alt="creative ways to give money as gifts" width="484" height="355" /></p> <p>Visa offers a specific section for online vendors that offer Visa gift cards. In many cases, these are banks where you have to be a member, but if you scroll through the list you’ll find some pretty awesome gift card vendors that let you customize the card design.</p> <p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36771" style="border: black 1px solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/giftcard2.jpg" alt="creative ways to give money as gifts" width="579" height="432" /></p> <p>For example, on Visa’s list you’ll find <a href="http://www.giftcardlab.com/default.aspx">Gift Card Lab</a>, where you can actually upload photos and use them to create your own customized prepaid Visa card. Now how cool is that? Mastercard similarly offers a list of online and offline vendors where you can purchase prepaid Mastercard gift cards.</p> <p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36773" style="border: black 1px solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/giftcard3.jpg" alt="creative ways to give money as gifts" width="551" height="403" /></p> <p>Alas, most of the Visa and Mastercard vendors will only sell gift cards for use within the United States, so if you’re an international customer then you’ll want to check out the awesome international gift card service known as <a href="http://cardrex.com/?page=default">CardRex</a>.</p> <h3><strong>Creative Ways To Give Money In A Meaningful Way</strong></h3> <p>Of course, maybe you don’t just want to send money – but instead send a gift that’s a little bit more meaningful. Maybe the person that you’re sending the gift to is a book lover, or an online shopping addict or loves to dine out! Thankfully, almost every online store offers gift cards, but in my opinion one of the best gift cards that everyone loves to receive is an <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/gc">Amazon Gift Card</a>.</p> <p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36774" style="border: black 1px solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/giftcard4.jpg" alt="give money" width="550" height="375" /></p> <p>Amazon is an online paradise for any shopaholic. If you’re buying for an avid shopper, this is one gift that will be greatly appreciated. The convenience of <a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/go-gift-shopping-with-amazon-gift-centra/">Amazon cards</a> is obvious – especially when you just don’t have time to wait for the card to get shipped to the recipient. If you need it <em>today</em>, then e-mail the gift card to them! If you’re throwing a birthday party or they’ll be arriving shortly, just print out the gift card right on your home printer!</p> <p>If you do send an Amazon card through the mail, they’ll include a free greeting card with it. However, if the standard Amazon Gift Card isn’t creative enough for you, just scroll down the Amazon gift card page for the option to visit HDGreetings where you can personalize an e-card using your own photos. When you’re done, just email it!</p> <p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36775" style="border: black 1px solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/giftcard5.jpg" alt="give money" width="463" height="372" /></p> <p>Maybe the person you’re sending money to isn’t really a shopper, but instead loves to go out and dine at various restaurants. In that case, the obvious choice is to head on over to <a href="http://www.restaurant.com/gift.asp?pgn=mega">Restaurant.com</a>. Sure, you could go out and buy a specific gift card for a single restaurant, but why not let the recipient of your card choose their own dining experience? At Restaurant.com, they get to do just that.</p> <p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36776" style="border: black 1px solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/giftcard6.jpg" alt="give money" width="530" height="435" /></p> <p>When you buy someone a Restaurant.com certificate, they can choose from over 13,000 restaurants across the United States. If you’re in the UK, check out <a href="http://www.thegiftcardcentre.co.uk/templates/page_01.php?cfp=page:0001&referrer=none">The Gift Card Centre</a>, <a href="http://www.eshagun.com/">Esha Gun</a> for Indian gift cards, or if you’re in a country where it’s virtually impossible to access useful banking services like this – consider the <a href="http://www.rbcwminternational.com/international-private-banking.html">Royal Bank of Canada</a>. It’s one of the few banks that offers truly international services, including credit and debit card services. When living in an unstable part of the world, it’s a safe solution.</p> <h3><strong>Create Fun Customized ScratchOff Cards!</strong></h3> <p>If you want a <em>really</em> creative way to give money, consider creating a <a href="http://www.personalizedpartyscratchoffs.com/">Personalized Party Scratchoff</a> card. These is a significant collection of premade scratch cards, but you can also email this vendor and ask them to custom create one for you. Unlike other services that are corporate based, which require you to order thousands of cards, with this service the minimum order is only ten.</p> <p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36780" style="border: black 1px solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/giftcard7.jpg" alt="unique ways to give money gifts" width="431" height="426" /></p> <p>This is a fun approach, because you can have them play a scratch off game that you’ve customized, and when they win you can hand them the envelope full of money as the prize! It would add a bit of fun and laughter to any party.</p> <h3><strong>Send Graduated Paypal Payments</strong></h3> <p>The last creative way to give money that I’d like to mention is something I call the “graduated” gift approach. It does require that the recipient have a Paypal account. In the case where the friend or family you’re giving the gift to does have one, just go into your Paypal account and send a personal gift payment as shown here.</p> <p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36781" style="border: black 1px solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/giftcard8.jpg" alt="unique ways to give money gifts" width="462" height="406" /></p> <p>Just one dollar? Yes, it’s the beginning of the graduated gift that will keep on giving every day up to the person’s birthday. This works great up to about age 16. On the number of days prior to the person’s birthday, you send them a very small gift via Paypal. For example, if they’re 15, send them a penny ($0.01) and then write a note that you plan to double the gift every day until their birthday.</p> <p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36782" style="border: black 1px solid;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/giftcard9.jpg" alt="unique ways to give money gifts" width="321" height="344" /></p> <p>At first, your gift recipient may scoff as the amount goes from just 1 penny, to two, to four, to eight…  However, on the last few days up to the 15th birthday, the payments are just over $40, just over $80, and then a final payment of $163.84!</p> <p>Before you take this gift approach, make sure that <em>you</em> understand the power of compounding, and calculate each payment amount before you get started. You’ll have to send a sufficiently low initial payment so that you can afford to send all of them – especially the last few big ones. This approach makes for a wonderful countdown to a big day, like a graduation.</p> <p>Do you have any creative gift giving ideas using online resources? DIY weblog Instructables has you covered with this easy-to-build chalkboard table.</p> <p>The instructions don’t require any super-intense DIY know-how, just some basic tools and a little elbow grease. It mainly consists of painting, gluing, and a little bit of sawing and drilling. There are quite a few materials, but nothing you shouldn’t be able to find with a trip to your local Ikea and Home Depot—some board for the table, a trestle for the legs, chalkboard paint, and some aluminum extrusions for holding the chalk on the side of the table (and, of course, the usual screws and drill bits that you may or may not have lying around). The nice thing about this guide is that it’s extremely detailed, with tons of pictures to go along with the process (so you don’t end up asking “Why doesn’t mine look like <em>that</em>?). Hit the link for the full details.</p> <div><a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/Chalkboard-Table/">Chalkboard Table</a> [Instructables]</div> <p><br clear="both" style="clear: both;"/><br /> <br
